Adjectives (Lýsingarorð)

Icelandic adjectives change their form slightly to "agree" with the noun they modify. The gender, case (grammatical function) and number (singular or plural) are the things that cause changes in adjective form.

There isn't one simple rule or table that can tell you how all adjectives will be declined. Most of the changes are to the ending of the word, but not all are. Notice later on how the adjective for „old“ is „gamall“ for a man and „gömul“ for a woman.

Adjectives come before the noun and, as in English, there are two basic ways of setting up the adjective-noun relationship:

1. Predicative adjectives: The noun is adjective.

Blómin eru blá.
The flowers are blue.

2. Attributive adjectives: An adjective noun.

Rautt blóm.
a red flower.

Form 1 of adjectives get declined for gender and number, but are always in nominative (nefnifall).

Form 2 of adjectives get declined for gender, number, and case.

Safnið er gamalt.
The museum is old.

Söfnin eru gömul.

The museums are old.

Maðurinn er gamall.

The man is old.

Mennirnir eru gamlir.

The men are old.

Konan er gömul.

The woman is old.

Konurnar eru gamlar.

The women are old.

Þetta er gamalt safn.
That is an old museum.

Við lærum um gamalt safn.

We learn about an old museum.

Við skoðum list í gömlu safni.
We see art in an old museum.

Við sendum pakka til gamals safns.

Maðurinn er gamall. Konan er gömul. Prikið er gamalt.

Now for plural

Mennirnir eru gamlir. Konurnar eru gamlar. Prikin eru gömul.

In form 1, the declensions are the same whether the word is with or without an article.
