Pronoun

In Hindi grammar, "सर्वनाम" (Sarvanaam) refers to pronouns. Pronouns are words that are used in place of nouns to avoid repetition and make sentences less cumbersome. Sarvanaam (pronouns) play a crucial role in constructing sentences and expressing ideas more efficiently.

Personal Pronouns - पुरुषवाचक सर्वनाम (Purush Vachak Sarvanaam)

The words which indicate a person are called personal pronouns. 'Personal pronouns' come in place of personal (male or female) names.

There are three types of personal pronouns given in the table below:

First person Helping Verb Example
I - मैं (Mai)/मैने (Mai ne)
We - हम (Hum)
Am - हूँ (Hun)
Are - हैं (Hain)
मैं जा रहा हूँ (" I am going ")
हम जा रहे हैं ( " We are going ")

Second person Helping Verb Example
You(honorific) - आप (Aap)
You (informal) - तुम (Tum)
You (intimate) - तू (Tu)
Are - हैं (Hain)
Are - हो (Ho)
Are- है (Hai)
आप कहाँ जा रहे हैं? ( "Where are you going?")
तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो?( "Where are you going?")
तू कहाँ जा रहा है?( "Where are you going?")

Third person Helping Verb Example
He/She/It/This/That - यह / वह (Yaha/Vaha)
They/ These/Those - ये / वे (Ye/Ve)
Is - है (Hai)
Are- हैं (Hain)
यह मेरा घर है | / वह मेरा घर है |("This is my house/ That is my house ")
ये जा रहे हैं | / (" They are going ")

Indefinite Pronouns - अनिश्चयवाचक सर्वनाम ( Anischay Vachak Sarvanam)

They indicate general rather than particular people and things.

Example :
  • Someone - कोई (Koi)
    • कोई वहाँ पर है / "Someone is there"
  • Something - कुछ (Kuch)
    • कुछ तो करना होगा (Something has to be done)

Interrogative Pronouns - प्रश्नवाचक सर्वनाम (Prashna Vachak Sarvanam)

They are used to ask questions about people and things.

Example :
  • Who - Kaun( कौन )
    • कौन है वो? ( Who is that? )
  • What - Kaun(क्या)
    • क्या कर रहे हो ?(What are you doing?)
