I'm sorry to report that LingQ is down. Netnation, our hosting provider, had a power outage in their hosting facility in downtown Vancouver. Even though our server is, in fact, hosted in Austin, Texas, the domain name points to the Vancouver facility and is then rerouted to Austin. Since the Vancouver facility is without power this redirect can't happen and you can't reach LingQ. Don't worry the site is, in fact, still up and all your data is safe. As soon as power is restored to the Vancouver data centre, the site will be reachable again.
Sorry for the inconvenience! There is not much we can do but wait. They are telling us it should be back up by tomorrow. We had a big winter storm in Vancouver over night and today which I assume caused the electrical problem.
We've had quite a snowy last few weeks her in Vancouver. Here's a picture of me on Monday after cross-country skiing for an hour around town! Yes, Gordie the dog came with me. We got another 30 centimetres of snow, at least, last night and today, after this picture was taken.

I just saw this post on Jason's blog talking about his success learning French on LingQ. What can I say? It just works.

We have a made a slew of recent changes to courses. First of all, we reduced the length of the courses from 12 to 4 weeks. This was done because it is simply easier for both tutors and learners to plan 4 weeks ahead as opposed to 12 weeks.
In addition, we just launched an update to the course list page which lets you try courses for free. Now, when you are looking at the course description you will see two options; one to sign up for the course and one for the free version of the course.
If you start the free version, you will have all the lessons added to your Self-Directed Course. You can read and listen to the lesson and LingQ vocabulary words. The writing and speaking tasks are, of course, optional but you can submit writing for correction and sign up to join the regular course conversations, if you want.
If you buy the complete course, writing and speaking are included in the cost and you will reserve your spot in course conversations. You will also receive free personal tutoring which includes having your questions answered by your tutor and a final report. This is a great value for those of you ready to make the commitment to improve!
Finally, you will notice that the lessons covered in each course are listed in the course description as are the assigned writing and speaking topics.
Check out the new courses list and sign up for a course today!

We would like to welcome Cakypa, mackenzie, michal, alleray, and flavio_fla to the top ten activity leaders. Thanks for all the effort you have put into language study here at LingQ! In other news, Adrian_r has managed to maintain his placing in the top five. Skyblueteapot has dropped out of the top ten but is still among the leaders. Where are you leie92? And Jeff_lindqvist is, as always, a consistent top ten performer. This isn't exactly news, but,... you guessed it, six months in a row for darbanville!
Of course not all countries celebrate Christmas, but the message of goodwill to all people crosses all boundaries and cultures. You can spread the Christmas spirit by reaching out to people in your community which is international in the internet age. So lets all try to make new connections by studying languages with our friends! Happy holidays from LingQ!
